Data spaces in action: Building trust and standards for global data spaces

Building effective data spaces is like reading a map – you need clear directions and reliable landmarks. As IDSA moves forward, our direction is clear: strengthening the foundations that make standardized data sharing possible across industries and borders. In the coming months, we’re concentrating on what we do best – developing and refining the essential tools that power the data space ecosystem. We’re talking about the Dataspace Protocol, the IDS-RAM, the IDSA Rulebook, and the Data Spaces Body of Knowledge. These are our fundamental components that enable practical, standardized data sharing solutions.

Bringing together diverse perspectives

But this isn’t just about technology; it’s about people. Our strength lies in bringing together diverse perspectives. Users, technology providers, policymakers, and researchers work side by side to create practical solutions. Throughout 2024, IDSA’s global influence grew significantly. Our community now spans 32 countries across all continents, with hundreds of experts contributing to various workstreams. This worldwide reach has helped shape national data strategies and business frameworks, building on our nine-year foundation in data spaces.

A major milestone was the advancement of the Dataspace Protocol toward ISO standardization. This protocol addresses key challenges in data sovereignty and interoperability, and trustworthiness. Working alongside W3C and CENELEC, we’re creating harmonized specifications that align with the European Data Act and global standards.

Building trust and partnerships

Trust and certification remained central to our work. We welcomed new certified connectors from Huawei and Gate Institute, while celebrating our first operational environment certifications for Rinis Foundation and the Mobility Lab in Victoria, Spain. Looking ahead, IDSA’s certification 2.0 will ensure to keep pace with technological progress.

Our partnerships expanded through collaborations in Japan and China. The telco provider community grew stronger with China Telecom joining our network. Meanwhile, our test beds supported practical implementation through research, harmonization, and industrial use cases.

Knowledge sharing and implementation

The new Professional Qualification Program, based on our Data Spaces Body of Knowledge, will help organizations build necessary expertise. The Data Spaces Radar provides visibility into active initiatives and opportunities for collaboration.

Our publications such as the Data Connector Report and a study on business models in data spaces demonstrate real-world adoption and value creation. These insights guide the discussions in our working groups where we drive the development of the Dataspace Protocol, IDS-RAM, IDSA Rulebook, and other foundational tools.

Join us in building this collaborative future. Whether you’re a technology provider, policymaker, or potential data space user, there’s a place for you in shaping the next generation of standardized data sharing.
