The International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) and the OPC Foundation are deepening their collaboration to advance interoperability and data governance in industrial automation.
By combining OPC UA’s extensive framework for semantic interoperability with IDSA’s robust governance model, this partnership aims to enhance secure and controlled data sharing across industrial ecosystems.
The OPC Foundation provides the largest ecosystem for semantic interoperability in automation through OPC UA, which includes over 150 semantic domain standards. This ensures seamless communication and integration across diverse automation systems, fostering efficiency and connectivity. IDSA complements this by adding a governance layer that defines who can access data, for how long, and under what conditions – ensuring data sovereignty.
Through this collaboration, companies can seamlessly integrate both standards into their architectures, allowing for secure data exchange while maintaining control over their information. Existing environments can be updated quickly to incorporate governance mechanisms for OPC UA-based data sharing.
By strengthening our partnership, we enable interoperable, sovereign, and trustworthy data sharing, driving meaningful advancements in industrial automation.”
Lars Nagel, CEO of IDSA
“Connecting the largest industrial automation ecosystem with emerging data space concepts will accelerate industry adoption. With OPC UA widely implemented in modern and legacy factories, we provide the necessary bridge to IT systems, unlocking new opportunities for data-driven innovation.”
Stefan Hoppe, President and Executive Director of the OPC Foundation
The OPC Foundation will share more details about this strategic collaboration at the OPC Foundation Cloud Initiative conference during Hannover Messe 2025.
