Zero-SWARM: Safe and autonomous transport of goods in the factory shop floors using 5G
The Zero-SWARM project is revolutionizing intra-factory logistics with 5G-enabled automation, enhancing safety, efficiency, and coordination between Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and personnel. Traditionally, AGVs rely on local sensors and SLAM-based navigation, limiting their ability to detect and react to obstacles beyond their direct line of sight. The integration of 5G-powered real-time data sharing and centralized coordination offers a groundbreaking solution to these challenges. This trial demonstrates how 5G connectivity and sensor fusion can enable AGVs to “see” beyond physical obstacles, allowing for anticipatory driving and optimized traffic coordination. By leveraging real-time data from distributed LIDAR sensors and a centralized digital twin, AGVs can reduce unnecessary stops, minimize collisions, and enhance logistics efficiency on factory shop floors. A key innovation of this approach is the introduction of a centralized controller that orchestrates different distributed AGV coordinators. This ensures seamless data exchange between various technologies and machinery, enabling better positioning, improved efficiency, and predictive analytics for logistics operations. The trial, conducted at RWTH Aachen Campus in collaboration with CCI and SICK, significantly contributes to Zero-SWARM’s vision for digitally enhanced, carbon-neutral manufacturing. By combining 5G’s ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) with edge-cloud industrial computing, this initiative is paving the way for safer, smarter, and more autonomous industrial transport systems. With advanced data-driven safety mechanisms, AGVs can navigate dynamically, reduce accidents, and optimize overall logistics processes, making factory operations more resilient and efficient. This trial marks a major step towards the next generation of intelligent intra-logistics and redefines the role of 5G in industrial automation.
